VPS FAQWhat is a VPS used for?
A VPS is a virtual private server used to host websites - including online shops, written content, media content, and/or software applications, primarily web applications - portals, extranets, collaborative solutions, wiki, CRM, etc.
In contrast to a web hosting plan, a VPS can isolate multiple applications within a single virtual machine that's dedicated to one customer. This virtual machine shares physical resources (infrastructures) with other virtual machines, but a share of these resources is dedicated to it.
Anybody with minimum technical skills can use a VPS. The OVH guides will help you find the answers to all your technical questions.
Only minimal administration skills are required. OVH is increasingly offering pre-installed versions, and versions equipped with tools and applications to make it easier to manage these containers. If you need a hosting system based on guaranteed resources but don't want to deal with server administration, OVH recommends Performance Hosting.
This depends on the power your choose and the criticality of the hosted environment.
The SSD VPS gives you an affordable VPS and high performance.
You then have the possibility to scale up your VPS.
A VPS is the logical next step after a web hosting plan.
A VPS gives you more freedom and root access, which gives you access to Apache, and PHP init so you can change PHP variables, install an SSL certificate and any type of software. In short, a VPS gives you much more freedom, without the responsibility that comes with a physical dedicated server.
On a shared server, however, you don't control performance, so you rely on the performance provided by the shared platform. With a VPS, you need to choose a configuration that's suitable for your application now, and then adjust it to cater to your application's growth.
How do I choose a VPS?
Since 2013, OVH has been offering the Performance Hosting plan, which gives you the benefits of both of these solutions. This all-inclusive plan offers guaranteed resources and an outsourced environment managed by OVH, but you can currently only use it to host static or PHP websites.
VPS models are perfect for hosting the majority of controlled-size web projects.
A dedicated server is for you if you want to: have total control over the environment, build more complex architectures and solutions, configure more network components, deploy complex non-web-based solutions and/or have access to additional dedicated hardware components, e.g. a load balancer or firewall.
Customers who need more complex and flexible infrastructures to handle an increasing number of visitors should start off with a Cloud VPS. They can then scale up to an OVH dedicated server or a Cloud solution.
From the Control Panel or the OVH VPS API, you can upgrade your VPS to get more resources permanently.
It depends on the OS installed on your VPS and the VPS's configuration.
For basic configurations: via a remote desktop (particularly on Windows), in SSH command line on Linux, via a web-based control panel (Plesk, Cpanel, OVH Control Panel); via the solutions deployed on the server (e.g. CMS).
For more advanced configurations, VPS upgrades, the configuration of passwords and rights for the above actions: via the OVH RESTful API or the OVH Control Panel.
Fore more details, please see our VPS guides.
Your VPS will be active and available a few minutes after your payment has been processed. This process may take longer in the event that we need to manually validate your payment details as part of our anti-fraud policy.Where are the VPSs located?
They are hosted in our datacentres.
With each range, we offer you a choice of 3 locations where you can host your VPS: France ( Roubaix or Strasbourg) or North America (Beauharnois).
It depends on the capacity of the server and the size of the VPS; but an OVH vHost (clusters of several dozens of very large, fully redundant servers) can host several thousand VPSs.
It's very important to us that each VPS runs smoothly. This is why we're committed to offer you guaranteed resources.
As long as the content is legal and the website complies with the rules of an adult website, e.g. access to minors is prohibited, you can absolutely host adult content on your VPS.
Additionally, OVH informs the customer of their responsibility for their website content when they accept the OVH VPS contract (when they place their order).
It's down to you to migrate your data and applications on to the VPS and to reconfigure the DNS zone. How do I migrate the content from one VPS to another?
When you upgrade your VPS, the contents will be migrated automatically - you don't have to do a thing. OVH will ensure the continuity of your service. When you upgrade from a Cloud VPS, you can also choose whether to increase your partition or create another one. You will receive an email after the upgrade containing all the details.
Take note that you can only upgrade to a VPS in the same range as your current VPS (e.g. Cloud VPS 1 to Cloud VPS 2). To upgrade to a different range, you will need to order a new VPS from scratch.
Yes, a VPS can be partitioned and you can host multiple websites or projects for multiple clients on it. You just need to allocate a private space, of which you choose the volume, to each client.
This is your server space, and you can organise it as you see fit.
Installing a multi-site control panel may help to simplify these actions. If you choose a Cloud VPS, you can get an Odin Plesk Panel licence to host up to 10 sites on your virtual server at no extra cost.
You can manage the VPS via the Control Panel. You can restart it, buy additional services, monitor your VPS, etc.
You can reinstall your server at any time by choosing one of the multiple distributions on offer.
The OVH RESTful API complements the Control Panel. It allows you to reboot, reinstall a different OS, buy additional services, upgrade, etc.Does the VPS have a dedicated IP address?
Every VPS comes with a dedicated public IPv4 address.
You can also add up to 16 additional geolocated IPv4 addresses to your VPS (see the OVH VPS additional services).
The SLA is OVH's commitment to service availability. This doesn't include planned and scheduled maintenance.
The VPS platform is proven to be stable and highly available. When you rent one of our virtual private servers, we guarantee the continunity of your business activity.
In the event that we do not fulfil our commitment, we will undertake to reimburse 5% of the monthly price per hour of delay, up to a maximum of 100% of the monthly amount for the product.
This SLA only applies to models in the Cloud VPS range.
You can always connect to your Cloud VPS, even in the worst-case scenario, and even if the bug is located on your system disk.
With rescue mode you can actually boot your system with a lighter system which isn't located on your local disk. You can therefore run all repair operations you need to, and then restart your server normally.
Please note that this feature can only be activated by the OVH support team. For more information, see our detailed guide.
This mode allows you to access the BIOS of your VPS via a secure connection. This is ideal in the event of an issue with your VPS or for administering your server. How do I configure my VPS's DNS?
Log in to the Control Panel to enter the DNS zone.
If you use Linux you can configure the DNS zone using a command line; you will have a graphical interface (if applicable).
You can change your VPS's OS anytime you want via the OVH RESTful API or Control Panel.
This feature is totally free-of-charge. For Cloud VPS models, you can also choose to reinstall Windows, or migrate from Linux to Windows (as an option).
Make sure you back up your data before you reinstall your server.
No; but you can add a domain name or email service via the Control Panel. How do I upgrade my VPS?
You can upgrade your VPS to a more powerful server within the same range at anytime via the Control Panel.
Your entire system (OS, software, settings) is saved and you only need to make one simple change on your VPS's hard drive. The operation is performed in a few minutes automatically, and is practically invisible to your end-users.
Lastly, the months that remain on your current VPS will be automatically transferred over, on a pro-rata basis, to your new model.
You are free to use your virtual machine as you wish and to install on it the software of your choice, subject to the legal limitations described in our general and special terms and conditions. When sharing a physical host, every user has a quota for each resource - CPU, RAM, drives, etc.
In compliance with our general conditions, we reserve the right to put a VPS in quarantine if used in a way that poses a threat to the stability of the infrastructure. Intensive and continuous usage of the CPU on a VPS Classic, for example, could trigger this process.
