Transfer your services without interruption

.

Overview

Modifying the infrastructure that manages your web and email services may seem complicated, especially when you want to avoid any interruption to service.

In this guide, we will go through these operations together. We have divided them in to four steps:

  • Step 1: order the web hosting package
  • Step 2: install the website and emails
  • Step 3: point your domain name to the OVH DNS servers
  • Step 4: transfer the domain name

These steps will allow you to transfer your website and manage your emails without causing any service downtime.

Some steps may be technical; we advise you to consult a webmaster if necessary.
  • If you're transferring several sites to different hosts, you must carry out these steps individually for each domain.

  • You could also use a multi-domain. You will find more information about this in this guide: Error, link to guide #1332 not found.

Step 1: order the web hosting package

.

Summary diagram

Firstly, we're going to order a web hosting package with OVH.

We need to provisionally reinstall the website and then create the email addresses before pointing the domain name to the OVH services.

In this example, let's assume that all services need to be transferred to OVH (domain name, email, hosting package, DNS management).

Your services must still be active before your can carry out these steps.
.

Order the web hosting package

Step 1
Go to the OVH welcome page.

In the search bar, enter your domain name, then click on Order.
Step 2
We notify you that the domain name isn't available for registration. This is normal as the domain name is already registered with another registrar.

Select:

  • "You are the owner of the domain name and you want to sign up for shared hosting."

  • Don't forget to tick the box to certify that you are the domain name holder.

Click on "continue" to proceed with the order.
  • Not all steps of the order process are explained here. Complete the steps and pay the purchase order before finalising this first step.

Step 2: install the website and emails

.

Summary diagram

Carry out this second step once your web hosting package is installed.

You will receive an email notifying you that your services are installed.

When your web hosting package is installed, a DNS done is automatically set up with OVH and we allocate DNS servers to you.

Your web hosting package includes storage for your website and your email solution.

This installation will not change any settings on your current services. They will continue to operate as usual with your current provider.

*The DNS server names in the diagram are given as examples and may later be changed.
  • You will now need to take the steps to transfer your services. You're going to copy your entire website and install the copy on your OVH web hosting package.
  • Regarding your email account, you will need to recreate the mailboxes on our service.
.

Install web and email services

Install your website
You will need to:

  • get a full copy of your website
  • install this copy on to the OVH web server

  • Some of these steps, such as reconfiguring connection files in the database, are fairly technical. We advise you to consult a webmaster in these instances.

This guide is available to help you publish your site on the web:Web hosting: how to get my website online.
Install emails
  • You will need to recreate the same email addresses that you currently use.

  • This guide is available to help you set up your email addresses:Hosted email: How to set up an email address.

  • Once the transfer is fully complete, you will need to reconfigure your email software in order to access the parameters of our mail server.

  • This guide is available to help you configure your email addresses on email software: Web hosting: An overview of OVH email

  • Tip: OVH has made IMAPCOPY available to you. This is software that enables you to transfer your emails from one provider to another.

  • This guide is available to help you use the IMAPCOPY software: Error, link to guide #1310 not found.

Step 3: point your domain name to the OVH DNS servers

.

Summary diagram

Before beginning this step, your website must be fully installed on the OVH web server and your emails must be set up in your OVH web hosting package.

We're going to:

  • Change the DNS servers that your domain name uses to match the diagram opposite.

  • The aim?

  • Now that everything is set up on the OVH services, we're going to point your domain name to the OVH DNS servers.

  • *The DNS server names in the diagram are given as examples and may later be changed.
  • Once you've completed this step, you will be using OVH services and no longer those of your old provider.
  • It will take from 24 to 48 hours to for the transfer of your services to take effect.
  • There will be no interruption to your service during this time. Your visitors will either pass via an updated DNS and will therefore be directed to the new OVH services, or they will go via a DNS that's not yet updated and will be redirected to your old services.
.

Configure the DNS

How do you do this?

  • Firstly, you will need to locate the DNS servers allocated to you.

  • You were sent an email with details on the DNS servers allocated to you. You can also find this information in the Control Panel under DNS zone management.

Where do you modify your DNS servers?

  • As your domain name is currently registered with another registrar, you will need to contact them to update your current DNS servers to the OVH DNS servers. Note: a domain's DNS servers will update to where the domain name has been registered.
Reminder:
  • Once you've completed this step, you will use OVH services and no longer those of your old provider.
  • It will take from 24 to 48 hours to for the transfer of your services to take effect.
  • This includes emails. If one of your customers sends you an email and it goes via an updated DNS, the OVH mail servers will receive it. If the DNS server isn't updated, your old provider will pick up the email. You will therefore not lose the email, but you will potentially have emails on two different servers during the transfer time.
  • Please note: if specific fields are indicated in your current DNS zone, we advise you to replicate them in the OVH DNS zone before you change your DNS servers.

Step 4: transfer the domain name

.

Summary diagram

We will complete the final step of the transfer without interruption by transferring your domain name.

Following the steps you've already carried out, your domain name is still with your old provider, but it points to your OVH services.

You just need to transfer your domain name to OVH to match the opposite diagram in order to centralise your services.

Your service should not be interrupted because your domain name will still point to your OVH DNS and services will remain operational during the transfer.

*The DNS server names in the diagram are given as examples and may later be changed.
  • The domain name transfer is free with every ordered OVH web hosting package. You just need to generate a purchase order and submit it to the support team for it to be validated. For this, you must've selected the Gold offer for the domain name.
.

Transfer the domain name to OVH

You need generate your order from the OVH website.

  • After you order a web hosting package, you can validate your purchase order for free. To do this, you will need to submit the purchase order to the support team.
