This guide contains information on changing the owner of a country code top-level domain (.fr .re .tf .pm .yt .wf .eu .be).

Please note: if a domain is unlocked, it will be locked again after seven days (the period is the same for all extensions).

  • Changing the owner for a domain name registered at OVH
Step 1
Go to the OVH website.

In the search bar, enter the domain name whose owner you want to change. The domain must be registered at OVH.

Select "Order" to continue.

Please note: you can only do this if you are one of the domain name contacts (billing, technical or administrative contact).
Step 2
A message will appear warning you that the domain name already exists and that it is not available for registration.

Select "You are the domain name owner and you want to change the owner". You then have to tick the appropriate box to confirm you have read the information.

Then click "Continue"
Step 3
You will see a summary of your order.

Make sure that the all details are correct and continue.
Step 4
Select "You are already a customer"and enter your NIC handle and password.

Note: You can only start this procedure if you are one of the domain name contacts (billing, technical or admin). If this is not the case, an error will be generated.

Click "Continue".
Step 5
Here you can choose the new domain name owner by entering an existing username, or creating a new one.

You may be asked to enter this information several times. Make sure that the username is correct.

Please be aware that the new owner must be different from the old owner, or you will get an error.

Click "Continue".
Step 6
If you want to change the owner of a domain name which uses a .fr, .re, .tf, .pm, .yt, or .wf extension, AFNIC will send a verification request.

This may differ depending on the extension or the legal status of the owner.

You have to enter details of the new owner, which will be sent to AFNIC.

Click "Continue".
Step 7
At this stage, you will be asked to choose your domain's DNS servers.

To do this, choose from the options available in the dropdown menu.
You can select the OVH DNS servers (default) or use custom DNS servers.

To avoid any errors, we recommend that you contact the person who manages your DNS server before you make your choice.

Click "Continue".

Once the purchase order has been settled, the owner change process will begin.
Starting the owner change procedure
Once the owner change procedure has begun the Registry sends two emails, one to the current owner of the domain and one to the address of the new owner.
Validating the emails
You have to validate both emails received even if the two contacts have the same address.

Rules for confirming the emails:

  • If the email is rejected or there is no response for 15 days: the process is susepnded **
  • If only one of the emails is confirmed: the process is suspended**
  • If both emails are confirmed: the next step will be taken within 24 hours.

( **If the process is suspended, you can restart if without having to pay for a new service. Go to the Control Panel homepage, click on "My products" -> "Ongoing operations", then restart the owner change procedure.)
Completing the owner change process
The owner change is complete!

The Whois modification will be done within 24 hours.

Once the purchase order has been settled, the owner change process will begin.

  • Scenario n°1: simple owner change (the domain name is at OVH)
Change owner
Once you start the owner change process, it all happens automatically.

In this case, you do not need to unlock the domain nor retrieve the transfer code.

The owner change and the whois update are completed within 24 hours of the purchase order being settled.

  • Scenario n°2: change owner and transfer domain to OVH

Once you start the owner change process, the Registry sends a message to the current owner's email address.


You can get the transfer code from the .eu registry's website.
Confirmation of the change of owner
The new administrator contact must enter the transfer code in the OVH customer account.

If it is not validated, the owner change cannot be completed.

The owner change is complete!

The Whois modification will be done within 24 hours.

Warning: if you change the registry, you must unlock the domain.

Once you start the process, the Registry sends a message with the transfer code to the current owner's email address.

The new administrative contact must enter the transfer code in the OVH customer account.

If it is not validated, the owner change cannot be completed.

If you are changing the owner of a domain remaining at OVH, it is the current administrative contact who must enter the transfer code
