Dedicated Servers Glossary

What you are looking for What it means
CDN The Content Delivery Network enables static content to be stored (cached) on different machines (at specific locations), to improve loading times for your content and web pages.
CacheCade Operates the SSD as a read-write cache of the SATA or SAS disks. The most frequently viewed data is automatically placed on the SSD disk to improve performance.
CacheVault This system consists of a flash memory and it replaces the lithium-ion batteries to remove any risk of data loss in the event of a power failure on the server
DNS DNS servers enable a domain name to be connected to an IP address. DNS resolution refers to: translated into
Dedicated server A server with 100% of its resources allocated specifically to the machine. Not to be confused with the shared server, which shares the resources with all other hosted applications, or the VPS, where the resources are allocated by the application/user.
Distribution An application layer enabling control and command execution on your server. Different distribution editors allow graphic control panels to be integrated.
FastPath The MegaRAID controller is optimised for the SSD disks that enable improved read-write performance (up to 3 x more IOPS)
Firewall An application placed in front of your machines to filter the data passing through your servers, and to bring you the level of security required to prevent intrusions and other forms of hacking.
GIT Abbreviation of Guaranteed Intervention Time. In the event of failure, this commitment is supported by penalties, meaning reimbursements to the customer.
GRT Abbreviation of Guaranteed Repair Time. In the event of failure, this commitment is supported by penalties, meaning reimbursements to the customer.
Helium-filled hard disk drive The air inside the hard drive casing is replaced with Helium, which is seven times less dense. The force needed to rotate the platters and move the actuator arms is therefore less, which means more reliable data reading/writing.
Hot-swap Indicates that the server component can be modified without disrupting the functioning of the machine.
Hybrid An infrastructure configuration that makes use of various different hosting solutions e.g. dedicated servers, VPS, private and public Cloud, etc.
IPv6 The evolution of network adressing from 32 bits (IPv4) to 128 bits (IPv6).
RAID Real time data replication system on several disks simultaneously.
SATA Type of connectivity for hard disks with higher performances or transfer rates (in comparison to IDE connections).
SLA Service Level Agreement: the contractual commitment on the quality of service provided. It's often associated with the notion of availability and performance, and penalties are involved in the event of shortfalls.
SSD A hard disk with better performances than the classic hard disk (in the range of 0.1 ms against 7 ms on average).
Secondary DNS The "spare" server that takes over if the primary DNS fails.
Virtual Rack Offers the advantages of pooling the physical rack (private environment), while having the choice of geolocation on different machines (inter-datacentres). Works with the vRack solution.
