OVH: your free SSL certificates via Let’s Encrypt

It left beta a few weeks ago, and now the Let’s Encrypt service is available at OVH! The aim is to provide free SSL/TLS (Secure Sockets Layer/Transport Layer Security) certificates which are recognised by nearly all browsers, in a simple and automated way, via an open source client.

Together with the Mozilla Foundation and Cisco Systems, OVH has become one of the primary Let’s Encrypt sponsors, and they’ve made one promise: to provide free SSL/TLS (Secure Sockets Layer/Transport Layer Security) certificates in a transparent way. When this collaboration was announced, OVH CTO and Founder Octave Klaba, was very happy to state that “OVH is delighted to become a Platinum sponsor. With Let’s Encrypt, OVH will be able to set a new standard for security by offering end-to-end encrypted communications by default to all its communities”.

In a few months, nearly 1.5 million certificates have been generated, which just goes to show how hotly anticipated this project has been.

“The Web is an increasingly integral part of our daily lives, and default encryption is critical in order to provide the degree of security and privacy that people expect” Let’s Encrypt announced on their website when OVH’s sponsorship was unveiled.

Free SSL by default

The "HTTPS" protocol establishes an encrypted link between your website visitor’s computer and the server that your website is hosted on, using an X509 (2048 bits and higher) certificate and TLS encryption. This reduces the risk of your bank details or personal information being intercepted, for example.
If a padlock icon is shown in the navigation bar then your website is secure and authenticated by a recognised certificate authority.

Thanks to their partnership with Let’s Encrypt, OVH can now offer “SSL as a Service”, which means that no technical knowledge is required on your part as we take care of everything for you. The SSL certificate is included in our web hosting packages, and it will enable “HTTPS” by default and for free. The certificate is valid for 90 days, and it is automatically renewed without requiring any action on the user’s part.

"An HTTPS website will improve your Google ranking."

DV certificates to start with, followed by EV certificates

As well as ensuring that all data transferred between a website and its users remain secure, these certificates also verify the identity of the owner of the website. In other words, a digital certificate guarantees that transfers to this website are secure: these certificates are known as DV (Domain Validated) certificates.

Another advantage of having an HTTPS website is that it improves your Google ranking.

Currently, OVH is only offering DV certificates, and they are free. However in a few weeks, other certificates will be available to purchase, including the much in demand EV (Extended Validation) certificate. This certificate provides the highest level of SSL security, and in most browsers it is signposted by a padlock and a green address browser bar. EV certificates can verify much more precise information including the legal, physical and operational existence of the entity behind the domain name. In this way EV certificates boost trust and confidence in a website.
