What is a domain transfer?

A domain transfer is a change of registrar i.e.: a company which is entitled to register and manage domains.

The transfer price includes a registration fee for the year and the remaining time left with your current provider.
Who can order a domain transfer?
Transfers can only be requested by the owners of the domain. If the transfer application is put forward by someone else, it is automatically rejected.

How do I transfer a domain?

Transfer requires 3 steps:

• Step 1 - A request for confirmation is sent to all contacts indicated in the whois database. It may take up to 5 days.
• Step 2 - Domain status check. The domain must have an ACTIVE status in whois.
• Step 3 - Send a transfer request to your registrar. To avoid any refusals, we encourage you to contact your former provider beforehand.

Special conditions

Conditions for .fr and .be registration
It is a bit different when transferring a .fr: there is no request by mail but the owner remains the same. Only an agreement from the old registrar is required. Therefore, you must ask your previous registrar what procedures you have to follow in order for them to accept the transfer without any problems.

Conditions to ensure a successful transfer:

• Your domain hasn't expired;
• Your domain has been registered for 60 days / or was renewed at least 45 days ago;
• Contact emails in whois are correct;
• Contacts in whois, especially the owner, have been informed about the transfer;
• Expiry date is less than 60 days (condition for some registrars. Contact your provider for further information).

If the transfer was rejected for some reason (other than a mistake by OVH), the transfer fee will not be refunded. The fee applies as OVH have initiated the transfer procedure i.e.: launched an inquiry about domain renewal and verification.

For .be, Dns.be sends an email to the domain's owner for the agreement of the transfer.
